The VCU Health System encompasses the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals (845 beds), the 650 physician practice plan, 100 primary care and specialty clinics and a 180K person Medicaid HMO. This $2.6B organization is the single academic medical center for central Virginia.

My responsibilities include setting out the vision for IT, supported by effective strategic and tactical plans that define the best practice use of IT in support of patient care and operational excellence. Through a group of 7 directors, CMIO and two ACIOs, I oversee all IT operational, service and project activities.

Accomplishments to date, have included:

• Ongoing successful installation of the Cerner EMR with 100% CPOE in the inpatient setting with successful achievement of MU Stage 1 ($28M)
• Complete Cerner EMR implementation across all 100 ambulatory clinics.
• Development of a clinical transformation organization under the CMIO.
• Selection and initiation of a new hospital billing system (IDX HPA) and ERP system (Lawson).
• A new 5 year IT strategic plan focused on business intelligence and 2nd order effects from the EMR.
• Development of a new all digital 15 story acute care tower utilizing layers of technology (ubiquitous wireless, bedside device integration, mobile access, advanced beds) to facilitate communication and high quality care.
